Description: |
Project idea is to develop peer support groups, allowing receiving support from peers, and facilitating integration of people with disabilities in social life and work market. Also social skills update/ improvement programme was set up, support group leaders trained. The support centre has already 7 support points in other organisations, which has provided support to more than 1000 persons. More than 200 persons participate in support groups. |

Innovativeness:
Peer support idea was implemented in Latvia for the first time, providing possibility to discuss questions with professionals – support provider, who can fully understand one. People with disability or imminent disability has opportunity to receive support in a specific area, as Support centre is offering consultations and support groups on various diseases for people and their families. |
Effectiveness:
Within just one year support was provided 4700 times. On average 100 persons received support per month. 52 of support group members and support point clients have joined a voluntary work. This service has been registered in Social service register. Support centre’s training programme has been licensed in Riga city council. |
Dissemination:
Information about Support centre and support points placed on websites of participating organisations, informative leaflets distributed, many publications in newspapers, TV stories. |
Exploitation:
There are already 7 organisations involved in Support centre network, and there are plans for future extension of the network. |
